Microsoft has released two new apps for the iOS platform, Microsoft Lync 2010 for iPhone and Lync 2010 for iPad, targeted at enterprise users with an Apple gadget in their pocket or bag. Both free downloads – though requiring a Lync Server or Office365/Lync Online account in order to actually function – the two apps offer instant messaging, audio conferencing and VoIP calls while on the move.

Microsoft Lync 2010 for iPhone

Real-time availability updates are given, as well as single-touch Lync conference call participation to avoid having to punch in lengthy passcodes. There’s also transport layer security (TLS) and perimeter/internal network protection, neither of which demand a VPN, for increased data security.

Although of little interest to non-enterprise customers, the new smartphone and tablet apps are a sign that Microsoft’s software teams are taking Apple’s iPhone and iPad market penetration seriously. The company obviously has its own tablet strategy in the pipeline, with Windows 8 expected to show up on models from ASUS and Dell in the latter half of 2012, but that doesn’t stop Microsoft from spreading its reach to those who call on its Cupertino rivals instead.

Earlier this month, Microsoft released a version of its Kinectimals game for iPhone and iPad, until that point only available on Windows Phone. The software push does also give the company’s engineers some practice making tablet apps, something we’re hoping gives them a head-start when it comes to Metro UI apps on Windows 8 tablets next year.

Description

IMPORTANT: Microsoft Lync 2010 for iPhone requires a Lync Server or Office365/Lync Online account and will not work without it. If you are unsure about your account status, please contact your IT department.

Lync 2010 for iPhone extends the power of Lync to your mobile device – including rich presence, instant messaging, audio conferencing, and calling features from a single, easy-to-use interface.

Key Features:

View colleagues’ availability in real time and select the best way to communicate – initiating an instant message (IM), email, or a phone call.

Connect to Lync conference calls with a single touch, without requiring long numeric passcodes or conference numbers.

Make and receive calls using your Enterprise Voice (Lync ID) number only, so you can connect with others using a single, consistent identity.

Lync 2010 for iPhone provides transport layer security (TLS) and perimeter/internal network protection without requiring a VPN, so your communications experience is safer no matter where you are or what network you use.

2Morrow Mobile today is proud to announce the release of Resolutions 2012, their new productivity app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Resolutions 2012 helps people keep their New Year’s Resolutions by forming new habits. This app is based on other 2Morrow Mobile behavior change apps, which have been featured in the “What’s Hot” section of iTunes in 121 countries and downloaded over 100,000 times.

“We created Resolutions 2012 to help people create the behavior changes needed to keep their New Year’s Resolutions. It’s all about forming habits that support successes,” says Brandon Masterson, President of 2Morrow Mobile. “We know this system works because 100,000 people have downloaded our other behavior change apps and they tell us the results are life changing.”

iPhone Resolutions 2012

Resolutions 2012 focuses on taking action! The act of recording efforts daily along with the encouraging reminders and milestones help users stay motivated. Users create custom habits to support New Year’s Resolutions or pick from over 100 predefined habits focusing on diet habits, fitness habits, financial habits, happiness habits and success habits. The goal is helping people live healthier, happier and more successful lives.

Selling for just 99 cents, this app aids people in creating up to five (5) new habits. Along the way, users can share their progress with others via email or Facebook, earn badges and reach new milestones. The goal is to motivate and reward users for making the changes they wanted to make!

Recent research shows it takes about 66 days to form a new habit. Resolutions 2012 helps people be successful in changing habits by holding them accountable and offering reminders and rewards along the way.

Four basic steps lead to long-term success:
1. Record your resolutions (or goals) and reasons for the desired change.
2. Identify the habits or behaviors you need to be successful.
3. Track your success by recording each action.
4. Engage the support of others.

Resolutions 2012: A New Year’s Resolution App for the iPhone. Key Features that help you succeed:

CardioMapper, the first app to use the Bluetooth Smart low-energy spec, is now available in Apple’s AppStore and available for iPhone 4S users. The $1.99 app from developer body-PRO is capable of connecting and continously transmitting data from heart rate monitors that feature Bluetooth Smart (previously known as Bluetooth 4.0) support.

For more than 10 years body-PRO has developed mobile health and fitness apps — first for the Palm OS platform and now for Apple’s iOS.

Cardio Mapper

CardioMapper uses the iPhone’s GPS to track a user’s route while running, hiking, or biking and provides metrics including speed, calories burn, and distance. Using a compatible heart rate monitor, “live pulse data will graph heart beat rhythm to match your heart,” according to the developer. The only iPhone that currently supports the new Bluetooth standard is the iPhone 4S, limiting the app’s usage to that device only.

The Bluetooth Smart standard includes developer specifications for connected vital sign monitoring devices for wireless health; the first two, a health thermometer profile and heart rate profile, were announced in June by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). A blood pressure monitor profile was later released. An estimated forty million medical devices already feature Bluetooth technology, according to the SIG.

The first company to announce a heart rate monitor featuring Bluetooth Smart was Dayton Industrial this June. Its low energy heart rate chest belt will feature energy efficiency technology that the company claims will enable it to run an average of 1.5 years on a single coin cell. The first production ready Smart-enabled blood pressure monitor was recently announced by IDT International, with a scheduled release date of March 2012, pending FDA and CE Mark clearance for the US and Europe.

In June 2009, MobiHealthNews spoke with Bluetooth SIG’s Executive Director, Mike Foley, about the potential for Bluetooth Low Energy (LE). Foley discussed Bluetooth’s potential in fitness and medical devices, the SIG’s relationship with Continua and discusses other short range wireless technologies.

Read the press release below.

PRESS RELEASE – Using the latest in dongle-free technologies CardioMapper became the first iOS App approved by Apple for the two newest wireless technologies. CardioMapper is capable of connecting and reading data from both Bluetooth 4.0 (also called Bluetooth Smart) and the SmartHRM WiFi. Download CardioMapper and check out these technologies at CES 2012.

Contrary to popular belief you burn more calories running than walking an equal distance. Now you can use the iPhone GPS to easily determine intensity based calories burned doing distance exercises like biking, running, ice skating, inline skating, walking and cross country skiing.

To help you time High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), CardioMapper also includes an interval coach that can tell you when to increase or decrease your intensity. Time based custom messages allow you to enjoy your favorite iPod music playlists while the interval coach tells you messages at preset times. Perfect for BFL, HIIT and other common intensity based training, it comes with a dozen virtual coach routines but additional routines can be easily added.

Full real time and post exercise analysis including: calories, duration, pace, speed, and of course distance. Full graphing of speed, pace and heart rate so you can review HIIT or other intensity systems. Live GPS accuracy let’s you know how accurate the GPS signal is.

Integrated Heart Rate Monitor lets you connect with the newest dongle-free heart rate monitors such as the SmartHRM and Bluetooth Smart 4.0 (BLE). CardioMapper is the first iOS App approved by Apple that supports BLE Heart Rate Monitors. Live pulse data will graph heart beat rhythm to match your heart. You can check out these new Heart Rate Monitors at CES 2012.

Best of all a single tap opens your data in body-PRO so you can compare your cardio against your goals.

With body-PRO, CardioMapper and NutriScanner you will succeed!

Device Requirements:

iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad

Requires iOS 4.2 or later

10.9 MB

Republican White House hopefuls are firmly on the campaign trail as the race to win the party’s nomination to take on Barack Obama in 2012′s US presidential election. The New York Times is also early into the race for app coverage of the campaign, with its new best iPhone app 2012: NYTimes Election 2012

NYTimes Election 2012 app

Released on 7 December for iPhone, it offers news, polling data, candidate information and – when the time comes – live election results.

“Mobile – and more broadly, phone and tablet – is going to be a huge way that people consume news about the election,” says Fiona Spruill, editor, emerging platforms at the New York Times.

“We wanted to try to do something innovative and different. It’s definitely aimed towards an audience that is extremely interested in political news. We hope people will be checking back multiple times a day.”

The app is notable for pulling in news stories from sites beyond the New York Times’ own, with the aim of helping people cut through the “overwhelming” amount of coverage that the election will generate in 2012.

“Our own journalism is really the anchor to this app, but we’re also adding this element of handpicking the other articles, videos and tweets that we think are the most important if you want to be a well-read political news consumer,” says Spruill.

“I wouldn’t call it aggregation: it’s curation. We have an editor whose full-time job is devoted to the app, and what she’s doing is looking at a whole bunch of different feeds to provide this one-stop destination for people.”

Spruill explains it’s the first time the New York Times has ever appointed a full-time editor for an app. This may be a wider trend: in August 2011 FT.com managing director Rob Grimshaw revealed that the Financial Times had just appointed its first mobile editorial head.

The hand-curation aspect of the New York Times’ election app is interesting. Spruill is no luddite, but she says that in this situation people rather than algorithms were the best approach.

“We were trying to create the best possible experience for people on their phone, and it takes people to do that,” she says. “What we were trying to provide was not something that could be delivered to an algorithm, even though there are many smart algorithms out there.”

iPhone NYTimes Election 2012 app

Spruill has been working in her emerging platforms role since the beginning of 2011, having moved from a position managing the newspaper’s website news team in the days before it was fully integrated with the newspaper’s main news team.

“Even in my past role I have always been a big advocate and champion for mobile,” she says, having been involved in the New York Times’ first mobile WAP site. Her current job has its emphasis on mobile platforms and technology, though.

Spruill works on long-term projects, having been very involved in the elections app, and before that the NYT’s iPad fashion app, The Collection, which was launched in November 2011. However, her role also includes thinking about the New York Times website, and what the experience of browsing it is like on mobile devices.

“As someone who’s been working on the web since 1999, mobile is so much more complicated – it makes the web sound like it was such a breeze!” she says.

“There are complexities in terms of technology, native versus HTML5, all the different platforms and devices… There are very interesting editorial questions, and how much we should create specific products for specific devices. And of course, there are a lot of really interesting business model questions too.”

Talking of which: The New York Times currently offers two digital subscription plans. People can pay $14.99 a month for a NYTimes.com + Smartphone Apps subscription, or $34.99 for All Digital Access, which includes the website, the smartphone apps and the newspaper’s iPad app.

The launch of The Collection and NYTimes Election 2012 is interesting because of the way they fit into the company’s paywall strategy. In the latter app, non-subscribers can only see the top six news stories, while the former is currently free to all, but in mid-March 2012 will make most of its content subscriber-only too.

In effect, the spin-off apps are providing more value for the digital subscriptions: people don’t pay for a single newspaper app, but for that plus a suite of apps around it. “We’re experimenting with these vertical apps, but our main news apps are our flagships,” says Spruill.

In the meantime, there are new technologies and business opportunities to explore. In response to a question about Flipboard, Zite and other news aggregation apps, Spruill says the NYT has had “really interesting conversations” with these companies, but has nothing specific to announce on the partnership front at this time.

She is also interested in expanding social features in the NYT apps beyond simply being able to share links on social networks, and is wrestling with that HTML5 versus native apps issue. It seems the hybrid approach espoused by British news companies at the recent Apps World conference is also finding favour across the Atlantic.

“The guts of the election app are HTML5, with a native wrapper around it,” she says. “It’s clear that native apps are something that’s very important to us and to our strategy going forward, but the promise of HTML5 is also something that we’re constantly exploring.”

Apple is supposedly in talks with at least one carrier regarding the launch of 4G versions of the iPhone and iPad.

iPhone 5

Apple may have disappointed its fans when it announced the iPhone 4S earlier this year, but it looks as though 2012 is shaping up to be a huge year for both the iPad and the iPhone. We’ve already heard reports of an iPhone 5 and an iPad 3 but today brings news that both of these devices will boast 4G LTE technology.

9to5Mac points to a report in Nikkei Business that says Apple has teamed up with Japanese network NTT DoCoMo for the launch of next year’s iPad and iPhone. The report claims that Apple’s Tim Cook has already met with top-level NTT DoCoMo executives and that the two devices are apparently going to utilize 4G LTE technology. Nikkei says the iPad 3 will launch next summer, while the iPhone 5 will arrive in the fall.

Responding to the report, NTT DoCoMo released a statement debunking the rumors. The statement, translated by a reader at 9to5Mac, says that NTT DoCoMo does not have any ‘basic agreement’ with Apple, nor is it engaged in any concrete/specific/tangible negotiations with the Cupertino-based company.

Though there are multiple LTE Android phones already on the market, Apple’s latest iPhone, the iPhone 4S, does not use LTE technology and instead relies on regular 3G. The fact that Apple is quickly falling behind its competition makes a 4G iPhone 5 seem like a believable rumor. Do you think Apple will go LTE for iPhone 5? Let us know in the comments below.

Apple’s iPhone sales for its first fiscal quarter of 2012 will hit the 28 million mark, according to J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz. He previously expected 25.3 million iPhone sales for the December quarter, but sees robust sales driving that figure up.

iPhone 2012 sales

Mr. Moskowitz’s new iPhone sales estimate comes, however, at the expense of the iPad.

“The thrust of our call is that we are increasing iPhone estimates but slightly trimming our iPad estimates,” he said. “Despite the uncertain macro environment, we expect Apple to sustain above-peer revenue growth, upward-trending margins, and incremental market penetration opportunities to fend off competitive and economic challenges.”

For fiscal 2012, he estimates Apple will sell 105.5 million iPhones, up from 101.3 million. He expects iPhone sales will hit 121.7 million units in fiscal 2013, up from 120.2 million.

He added, “We see no structural change to the iPad demand environment, but there has been limited uplift in build activity,” and lowered his Q1 iPad sales estimate from 13.3 million down to 13 million.

Strong MacBook Air sales have Mr. Moskowitz predicting Apple will sell some 5.4 million Macs during the quarter. He also doesn’t see the prospect of hard drive shortages from Thailand flooding to impact Apple.

Mr. Moskowitz is maintaining his “overweight” rating and US$525 target price for Apple’s stock. Apple is currently trading at $385.15, up 2.95 (0.77%).
